Retracted threads on IUD?

Have any of you had to own a coil removed when the threads have be retracted back into the uterus?
I've have an ultrasound and the coil is still in place, but the threads enjoy retracted inside.
What is the usual procedure for removal?
Is it painful or self-conscious?
